    What Is a 5-Speed Gearbox?

    A 5-speed gearbox is a manual transmission with five forward gear ratios plus a separate reverse gear, each selected through a clutch pedal and gear lever.     What Is the History of the 5-Speed Gearbox?

    The 5-speed gearbox descends from the sliding-mesh transmissions developed by Panhard et Levassor in the mid-1890s, among the earliest gear-selection systems fitted to an automobile.

    Three- and four-speed transmissions remained standard for most of the early 20th century. Five-speed transmissions appeared in sports cars as early as 1948, in the Ferrari 166 Inter, but stayed rare for decades. Five-speed manuals became a mainstream option in passenger cars during the 1980s, replacing four-speed units as the default in most compact and mid-size vehicles.     Which Vehicles Still Use a 5-Speed Gearbox?

    Genuine 5-speed gearboxes have mostly disappeared from new cars, replaced by 6-speed manuals, but remain common in motorcycles, particularly smaller-displacement and cruiser models.

    Manual transmissions of any speed count made up below 1% of new car sales in the United States in 2025, according to EPA Automotive Trends data, down from 35% in 1980. 27 manual-transmission models were available for the 2025 model year, falling to 24 for 2026.
